Context of the project
As part of the B4life facility financed by the European Union / INTPA F2, the project provides support for the development of renewable energies in 8 key conservation and development landscapes around protected areas. The project has an international scope. The renewable energy sources targeted are photovoltaic solar energy, hydroelectric power and energy from biomass.
The SHER Ingénieurs Conseils project was carried out in two phases:
- Phase 1: identification of the production potential of the various possible sources of renewable energy (solar, hydroelectric and biomass) and identification of the potential needs of the population and/or private actors present in each landscape
- Phase 2: implementation of pre-feasibility studies in each of the 3 areas selected after Phase 1, presenting possible technical options for the implementation of solutions, estimates of investment and operating costs.
SHER provided a multi-disciplinary team of engineers to identify the most appropriate renewable energies for each landscape, based on global databases and interviews with delegations and operators in the field. Following this initial identification, the European Union selected the 3 following countries to carry out pre-feasibility studies: Zimbabwe, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Central African Republic.
Here are some examples of the potential projects
- Identification of solutions free of indigenous firewood for tobacco curing (Zimbabwe)
- Development of an agri-hub based on irrigation as development driver on the outskirts of a national park (Zimbabwe)
- Support to the operationality of conservation actors and administrative structures (Central African Republic and Zimbabwe)
- Support to the development of a fish marketing network (Democratic Republic of the Congo)
