Context of the project
Conflicts in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have led to the displacement of civilians fleeing the conflict to Uganda. With the increase in population, the existing water supply infrastructure cannot meet the current demand, neither of the residents nor refugees. In collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the project aims to help the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) to improve its drinking water supply infrastructure in the Kisoro district.
As part of this assignment, SHER Ingénieurs-Conseils undertook the following activities:
- Demand analysis (current and future situation): based on a population estimate, the country's standards were applied to estimate the current water demand. A GIS-based Python model was developed to predict population trends and migration in the study area, and thus predict future water demand. This made it possible to visualise the water demand over time and across the study area.
- Resource assessment: a geological and hydrogeological study and a hydrochemical study of the two main water sources were carried out.
- Inventory and assessment of existing infrastructure: the diagnosis of the infrastructure was based on hydraulic modelling of the existing water network, including pumping stations, tanks and pipes.
- The main areas for development: a model of the network to meet demand in 2040 was also developed in order to define the infrastructure required for future years. An estimate of the cost of the works by phase has been proposed.
