Context of the project 

The objective of the technical assistance is to enhance the institutional capacity of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (Turkey) in the control and the prevention of lumpy skin disease. Various activities, including several training courses, have been carried out to implement procedures that comply with the European legislation. 

The project involves providing technical assistance to the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in the management of lumpy skin disease, including the preparation and implementation of vaccination plans for its eradication as well as training the staff of veterinary control laboratories and institutes and the Ministry staff in the control and the prevention of lumpy skin disease in accordance with European norms.

As part of this mission, SHER Ingénieurs-Conseils (JVL Consulting) is undertaking the following activities:

Axis 1: Services in the field of animal disease control, including the preparation and the implementation of vaccination plans for the animal disease eradication 

  • Epidemiological assessment and creation of a modelling system for lumpy skin disease 
  • Optimisation of laboratory diagnostic methods 
  • Determination of placement areas of light traps for vector studies 
  • Preparation of vaccination plan and analysis of vaccination against lumpy skin disease 

Axis 2: Support for veterinary surveillance and control/eradication programme for animal disease 

  • Training for veterinary control institutes (laboratories) on epidemiological evaluation of lumpy skin disease, risk assessment, laboratory requirements, transmission dynamics, management of disease suspicions, vaccines and vaccination 
  • Lumpy skin disease awareness seminars for livestock farmers 
  • Preparation of a report on the animal health strategy for lumpy skin disease 
  • Assessment of the risks associated with lumpy skin disease after eradication of the disease 
  • Preparation of a contingency plan for lumpy skin disease and conducting an epidemic crisis simulation exercise
