Context of the project
The Support project aiming at preserving the Rusizi watershed ecosystem in Burundi (PACECOR) mainly financed by the European Union's new Neighbourhood, Development and International Cooperation Instrument (NDICI – Global Europe), has the overall aim of "promoting the conservation and enhancement of biodiversity and sustainable and equitable socio-economic development in Burundi". The specific objective of the project is to "protect and enhance the ecosystem services of the Rusizi River watershed".
The project focuses on 3 main areas:
- Promoting and improving erosion control and protecting water basins and resources
- Improving household practices in terms of integrated ecosystem management and use, by promoting agroecology and low-carbon cooking practices for example
- Strengthening institutional capacities.
As part of this project, SHER Ingénieurs Conseils carried out the following activities:
- A refined technical analysis of the erosion control priority intervention zones
- A participatory diagnosis of the priority intervention zone
- The implementation of the reference situation, stakeholder mapping and updating of indicators and their target values
- Drawing up of an Environmental and Social Management Framework (ESMF) and of an Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP)
- Production of an atlas enabling multi-criteria analysis for the definition of erosion control actions
