Context of the project
The project is part of the fight against cholera project framework in South Kivu, with a particular focus on Bukavu and Uvira. The SHER-NODALIS consortium has been commissioned by the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) to carry out a study to improve drinking water production capacity for the city of Bukavu. This detailed preliminary design follows an initial summary preliminary design phase.
As part of this assignment, SHER Ingénieurs-Conseils undertook the following activities:
- Topographic survey (conventional ground survey with total station and DGPS combined with a drone survey) and geotechnical study
- Design of drinking water infrastructures. Plans and bills of quantities for an intake and grit chamber with a capacity of 25,000 m³/d as well as a new 15,000 m³/d treatment plant were developed. Modelling of the water network using the EPANET interface was used to determine pipe diameters, tank volumes and pump operation, while checking that the hydraulic parameters comply with standards.
- A detailed design of the water treatment plant, including an assessment of the chemicals to be used. An electromechanical study of the plant, including the technical characteristics of the equipment to be supplied, was also produced.
- Production of tender documents in a red FIDIC format, including in particular graphics and detailed bills of quantities
- An institutional study assessing the capacity of the various players in terms of project management and operation, and proposing an institutional plan for setting up the project This detailed design was completed in 2023 after the revision the location of the intake, the water treatment plant and, consequently, a part of the pipelines. The sites are modified in such a way as to ensure that the intake is located in a non-controversial manner outside the perimeter of the Kahuzi Bihega National Park (PNKB). The new pipe routes will ensure that the infrastructure still operates by gravity.
