Context of the project
The Climate Sahel Portfolio - Niger component, which is part of the Climate Sahel Thematic Portfolio (Mali, Senegal, Niger and Burkina Faso), aims to improve the integrated management of natural resources and sustainably restore the Sahel's natural ecosystems as part of the fight against desertification and the negative consequences of climate change, thereby strengthening the resilience of vulnerable Sahelian populations. The intervention strategy is a territorial approach designed to respond to interconnected and interdependent issues in a given area by including all the stakeholders concerned.
In this context, the specific objective of the study is to contribute to the sustainable management of water resources in the PTCS Niger intervention zone through the development of 2 SAGES in line with the national integrated water resources management policy formulated in the "National Action Plan for Integrated Water Resources Management" (PANGIRE).
As part of this assignment, SHER Ingénieurs-Conseils undertook the following activities:
- Data collection and analysis with central and decentralised administrations, projects, engineering offices, companies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), etc
- Organisation of a national meeting for feedback sharing on IWRM implementation in Niger
- Consultations withstakeholders in water resource management in the areas covered by the study (local authorities, technical services, users, NGOs and projects involved)
- Drawing up an inventory of water resources, their main uses and the factors affecting them, etc
- Assessment of short-, medium- and long-term trends in water resources availability and water demand.
- Definition of development options for water resources and identification of priority actions to be taken for integrated water resource management
- Based on the lessons learnt, formulation of two Water Development and Management Schemes
- Preparation of project sheets for the implementation of these SAGEs, identifying the players involved, the resources required and the implementation schedule
