Context of the project
With the support of the World Bank and the Government of Burundi, the aim of this project is to restore 1 million hectares of land by 2030 in order to reinstate land productivity in degraded landscapes. To this end, a pilot approach through the Burundi Landscape Restoration and Resilience Programme (PRRPB) has been used. The study is being carried out in three pilot areas: Isare (Bujumbura Rural province), Buhinyuza (Muyinga province) and Matongo (Kayanza province). In total, 31 hills are being studied.
After an analysis of available documents and detailed field visits, the multidisciplinary team:
- Formulated a detailed soil conservation programme for 31 hills covering around 30,000 hectares, in particular through the installation of progressive and radical terraces, the improvement of farming techniques at the level of individual farms, cooperatives and all the economic stakeholders of the watershed
- Ensured full supervision of works implementation, during which training in soil bioengineering was provided for the construction teams
The sustainability of the actions undertaken is ensured by the formulation of an appropriate operation and maintenance plan to be implemented by the administration of the hills benefiting from the improvements, using realistic human and financial resources.
