Context of the project

Songa Energy Burundi is a developer of renewable energy projects in Burundi. The development of Songa Energy's project portfolio began in 2015 with the development of hydroelectric projects in Burundi. Since early 2017, Songa Energy has been developing projects together with Virunga Power. Songa Energy Burundi is developing two hydroelectric projects, Ruyvi102 and Mule037, located in south-central Burundi, in Gitega and Bururi provinces.

SHER's mission took place within the framework of project studies for the development of the Ruyvi102 (1.7 MW) and Mule037 (9 MW) hydropower plants. The scope of services covered the following aspects: 

  • Field investigations: topographic and bathymetric surveys and supervision of geological/geotechnical investigations 
  • Project optimisation and design of various components: civil engineering works and hydromechanical/electromechanical/electrical equipment 
  • Energy performance analysis 
  • Transmission lines 
  • Assessment of solar-hydro hybridisation 
  • Interconnection study 
  •  Local distribution network study 
  • Environmental and social impact study 
  • Preparation of environmental and social management plans (ESMP) and environmental and social management monitoring plans (ESMP)
  • Cost and quantity estimates 
  • Construction planning 
  • Preparation of Tender Documents for the works and the supply of equipment, and assistance in the selection of contractors
