Context of the project

As part of the Kwihaza - Transformation towards sustainable food systems project, the study conducted by SHER aims to inventory the existing fishponds in Rwanda using GIS, remote sensing and field surveys. A suitability assessment framework for for cage aquaculture in Rwandan lakes will also be established. Maps of potential areas for Lake Muhazi will be produced. A WebGIS platform will be developed to disseminate the results of the study and serve as a decision-making tool for (inter)national stakeholders.

The main objective of the KWIHAZA project is to support the transformation of sustainable agriculture in Rwanda. It will ensure sustainable fish production, increase the consumption per capita and generate income by focusing on women and young people, SMEs and cooperatives involved in fishing, fish farming and related activities.

As part of this mission, SHER is carrying out the following activities:

  • Inventory of fishponds in Rwanda, including fishponds constructed in previous projects
  • Carrying out a field survey to collect general, technical and management information on existing fish farms.
  • Definition of the lake zoning framework for cage farming in Rwandan lakes
  • Identification and delimitation of potential zones for cage farming in Lake Muhazi
  • Carrying capacity estimation for Lake Muhazi
  • Presentation of the zoning assessment framework to stakeholders at a validation workshop
  • Development of a web-based mapping application for all mapping products (inventory of fishponds, zoning for cage ffarming in Lake Muhazi) in consultation with the relevant administrations (RAB, RWB, REMA)
  • Recommendations on a strategy for ongoing data collection and updating of the web platform
