Context of the project

The city of Musanze, the second largest city in Rwanda after Kigali, is subject to frequent flooding largely linked to the intense rainfall events observed in the volcano region. These phenomena cause damage to communities and infrastructures.

The aim of the project is twofold:

  • Drawing up the first stormwater management plan for Musanze taking into account the expected effects of climate change
  • Drawing up preliminary specifications for flood protection schemes for two key infrastructures, namely the new market and the associated food court located on a former marshland.

As part of this assignment, SHER Ingénieurs-Conseils undertook the following activities:

  • Construction of a hydrological model: data collection, parametrisation and calibration of the model, acquisition of field data and training of beneficiaries in the hydrological model
  • Assessment of expected climate change scenarios and their impacts on flooding
  • Drawing up a stormwater management plan for the city of Musanze
  • Drafting preliminary specifications for market protection facilities and the associated restoration area
