SHER contributes to restore the productivity of degraded land in Burundi

As part of its participation in the African Landscape Resilience Initiative and with the support of the World Bank, the Government of Burundi aims to restore 1 million hectares by 2030 through the Burundi Landscape Restoration and Resilience Project (Projet de Restauration et de Résilience des Paysages du Burundi, PRRPB).

A multidisciplinary team from SHER carry out a pre-feasibility study on 22 hills (approximately 22,000 ha) and design a detailed soil conservation programme; in order to implement some progressive and radical terraces and supervise the works by the HIMO (High Intensity Labour Force) method.

Training on soil bioengineering will also be provided for the construction teams.

Finally, the sustainability of the actions will be ensured by the development of an appropriate operation and maintenance plan, which will be undertaken by the administration and the population benefiting from the facilities.
