Context of the project

At the request of Rwanda Mountain Tea (RMT) and with the financial support of BIO Invest (Belgian Investment Company for Developing Countries), SHER Ingénieurs Conseils has carried out the final design and drafted the tender documents (DAO) for the Giciye hydropower station. SHER was also commissioned to monitor and control the works. The project is located in the Western Province of Rwanda. The diversion weir is located on the Giciye river. The water is then conveyed to a surge chamber via a 2.5 km concrete canal with a flow rate of 4m³/s. A 350 m long penstock then feeds a hydroelectric power station located 130 m below and equipped with 2 PELTON turbines, each rated at 2 MW. The plant is designed to produce around 18.3 GWh per year. Production is fed into the EUCL network, the Rwandan electricity distribution operator.

SHER's mission included the following activities:

  • Drawing up the final project
  • Preparing the tender documents and defining the technical specifications for the equipment
  • Consulting companies and suppliers
  •  Negotiating contracts and orders (hydro and electromechanical equipment and civil engineering)
  • Approval of execution/manufacturing plans, materials, programme and execution procedures
  • Coordination between the works company and the suppliers of hydro-electro-mechanical equipment
  • Administrative and financial management of the works
  • Approval of execution drawings, materials, programmes and execution procedures
  • Supervision of the installation of the infrastructures
  • Technical supervision of the execution of the works (including soil and material tests carried out by the company) and the manufacture of the equipment
  • Advising and proposing to the client that the works and equipment be provisionally accepted (on-site acceptance)
